Crafting bracelets and key chains from recycled bags is an excellent way to repurpose and recycle the plastic bags we bring home from the grocery store. Instead of purchasing plastic string for your next braided bracelet, give this project a try. Using a very simple strategy, you can transform plastic bags into colourful braided accessories. It is good for the earth and for your pocketbook.

Instructions

    Creating a bracelet

  1. 1

Cut a straight line across the top of a plastic bag to remove the handles.

  2. 2

Cut straight lines down the left and right edges of the plastic bag to remove the side seams. Keep the bottom seam intact.

  3. 3

Unfold the plastic bag so the front and back of the bag are lying flat in one long piece.

  4. 4

Cut the remaining bag into 5-cm (2-inch) wide strips, making your strips as long as possible.

  5. 5

Hold three plastic strips together and run your hand down the length of the strips to squeeze them all together and smooth them down.

  6. 6

Tie a knot at one end of the strips, leaving 5 cm (2 inches) of loose plastic remaining on the end.

  7. 7

    Braid the strips together.

  8. 8

Tie a small knot at the other end of the braid once you have reached your desired braid length, leaving at least 5 cm (2 inches) of loose plastic remaining on the end past the knot.

  9. 9

Tie the two knotted ends together, using the 5 cm (2 inches) of slack on either end, and cut off any excess plastic.

    Making a key chain

  1. 1

Repeat steps 1 through 6 above.

  2. 2

Braid the strips together until you have reached the desired length of your key chain, approximately 15 cm (6 inches).

  3. 3

Tie the end of your braid with a knot, making sure you have at least 5 cm (2 inches) of loose plastic remaining on the end past the knot.

  4. 4

String your key chain ring onto the braid.

  5. 5

Tie the two knotted ends together, using the 5 cm (2 inches) of slack on either end, and cut off any excess plastic.
