You can adjust the water pressure in your home by adjusting the water pump cut-in and cut-out pressure with the water pressure control switch. The pressure switch controls when the water pump cuts in (turns on) and cuts out (turns off). A loss of water pressure could be a sign of another issue to look for like lost air in the tank, but if you just need to adjust the switch you can easily do that yourself.

Skill level:

Things you need

  • Screwdriver
  • Water tank manual

  1. 1

Turn off electricity. Any time you are working around electricity, especially around water, you need to turn it off.

  2. 2

Check the manual for your water tank to find out the specifications for your pressure switch. According to the Washington Department of Health, common pressure ranges are 40 to 60 psi or 30 to 60 psi.

  3. 3

Locate the two pressure adjustment screws using your manufacturer’s manual. One will adjust the cut-in and cut-out, maintaining the gap between the two settings, and the other will adjust just the cut-out.

  4. 4

Turn the cut-in/cut-out screw with your screwdriver clockwise to raise the pressure. Or turn it counterclockwise to lower it. Turning the cut-out screw clockwise will raise the cut-off pressure and vice versa.

  5. 5

Turn on the electricity and test the water pressure. If the water pressure still needs adjusting, repeat steps.

Tips and warnings

  • If you adjust the cut-out screw too much, the pump could run continuously until it burns out.
  • If you experience a sudden change in water pressure, check for other problems with your water tank. You many need to call a professional plumber or have your water tank replaced.
