Windows Media Player has often played second banana with audio and video to the much more popular iTunes program. That said, many PC users who do not own iTunes may still want to play M4V files on Windows Media Player. This video file type can come with copy protection, in which case, it cannot be viewed by any player but iTunes. If it is not copy protected, you can take a few simple steps to view the file in Windows Media Player.

Skill level:

  1. 1

If you already have the supporting M4V codec, your copy of Windows Media Player may already play the M4V file you wish to view. Right-click on the file, scroll to \"Open With,\" then choose Windows Media Player. Double-click on the file again. If it does not open, skip to Step 2.

  2. 2

Windows Media Player is more accustomed to playing MP3 and MP4 files. Right-click on the file and scroll down to \"Rename.\" Rename the file with an MP4 extension instead of an M4V. This may allow the file to be viewed by your player. If not, skip to Step 3.

  3. 3

If the first two steps did not open the file, you may not have the proper codec to view it. Codecs are like driver files for audio and video. Windows does not provide codecs to view competing audio and video file types, so you will need to download codecs from a third party. Use a trusted source such as CNET for your download.

  4. 4

Once you have downloaded the codecs, place them in your computer in the folder “C:\windows\system32.”

  5. 5

Open the file in Windows Media Player again using either Step 1 or Step 2.

Tips and warnings

  • If you still have trouble opening the file, it probably has copy protection; you may need to download the file again in a more recognisable format.
