How to Keep Spoke Wheels From Rusting

Today, most spoke wheels are made from stainless steel because it is lightweight, hardy and will not rust. However, if your spoke wheels are made of chrome, then you may encounter some rust issues during their life. The best way to deal with rust on chrome is to attack first and keep spoke wheels from rusting entirely.

    Mix up your cleaning solution. In the spray bottle, combine five drops of dish soap and three cups of hot water. Swirl to mix, but do not shake your solution.

    Wipe down the spokes with a cleaning rag. Use your soap solution and a cleaning rag. Make sure every particle of dirt and grime is gone.

    Wax the wheels. In most cases, you will apply a thick layer of chrome wax polish and let it set for somewhere between 15 minutes and an hour. You can use a clean rag to apply the wax.

    Wax your spoke wheels every one to three months, depending on how much wear and tear they receive. This should keep them sealed and prevent rust from forming.

  • There are a variety of sprays, lacquers and oils that can be used to prevent rust. You will need to evaluate these based on what type of machine your spoke wheels are on, since not every spray is appropriate for every type of wheel.
