How to Find SIC Code Numbers

Every industry in the United States is classified by a Standard Industrial Classification (SIC). The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is the resource available for finding a SIC code. SIC codes are four digits long. The first two digits represent the industry division code and the subsequent two digits represent a specific product category within that division. SIC codes provide detail about the products and services in a specific industry; therefore, these codes are often used to study and analyze a variety of industries.

Difficulty: Moderate

Instructions

  1. 1

Open a browser window and go to the NAICS website (see References).

  2. 2

Click "Code Search." Scroll down until you see the "SIC Drill-Down Menu." Click on the "Div" range corresponding to the industry title you are interested in. For example, if you want to find the SIC for agriculture, forestry and fishing, click "01-09." You will see a list of all the two digit codes representing the divisions for this SIC code industry.

  3. 3

Click the two digit code that corresponds to the industry. For example, click "01" for agricultural production---crops. Now you will see the four digit SIC codes for this industry listed along with its corresponding NAICS code.

  4. 4

Click "Code Search" on this page to return to the drill-down menus and scroll down to the "SIC Drill-Down Menu" to find or research another SIC code.
