How to Determine Loader Bucket Size

Loader buckets attach to bulldozers, backhoes and farm equipment to help in moving large amounts of heavy material. These loader buckets come in a variety of shapes and sizes as well as having smooth or rough edges for scooping. The size of the loader bucket is determined by its interior volume, which is also known as its capacity. Volume determines the number of cubic feet of material that the bucket can hold when at full capacity.

Position the loader bucket so that its open side faces straight up.

Fill the gallon jug with water and dump its contents into the loader bucket. Repeat this process while counting the number of gallons required until the bucket is full. For example, the bucket might hold 50.0 gallons of water.

Convert the number of gallons to cubic feet by dividing it by 7.481, since each cubic foot contains 7.481 gallons. This is the size of the loader bucket in cubic feet. Completing the example, you have 50.0 gallons divided by 7.481 gallons per cubic foot, or 6.7 cubic feet.
