Dark underarms bother most women and some men, making them feel self-conscious. This common body problem can be caused by several factors. Some of these include: pregnancy, bad hygiene and genetics. Fortunately, there are simple remedies that will help you lighten dark underarms.

  1. 1

Apply lime or lemon juice to the problem area at least twice a day for one month, or until it lightens. Lime or lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent that will help lighten the underarm.

  2. 2

Wax or pluck your underarms instead of shaving them, as shaving can contribute to darkened underarms. Plucking or waxing removes the entire hair and does not leave a shadow of it on the skin’s surface, which causes the appearance of a dark underarm. If, however, you still prefer--or have a greater comfort level with--shaving your armpits, make sure that you use a shaving cream, which will help prevent discolouration.

  3. 3

Exfoliate your armpits. Darkening of the underarms is often associated with the build-up of dead skin cells. Use an exfoliating product that contains lactic acid.

  4. 4

Get tested for skin infections. A skin condition called Acanthosis Nigricans causes the underarms to darken. It is caused by several underlying factors such as taking oral contraceptives, hormone problems and other more serious ones such as diabetes and obesity. Your doctor may recommend prescription creams and lotions that contain vitamin A to lessen darkening of the skin.

  5. 5

Maintain a healthy diet. Avoid the intake of too much starch or sugar. Exercise regularly to maintain your weight. Darkening of the underarms can be avoided by treating an underlying cause such as obesity.

Tips and warnings

  • In extreme cases, laser surgery can help you lighten your dark underarms. Although a more expensive choice, it usually takes less time and effort.
  • If you plan to have your underarms waxed, have it done by a professional to avoid bruising and bleeding.
