How to Remove a VW Door Lock

Updated March 23, 2017

The door locks on Volkswagen vehicles use a lock rod and latch mechanism that sits behind the interior door panel. You must remove the panel to access the door lock. Use a special tool called a trim removal tool, available at most auto parts stores, to remove the panels on VW vehicles. You can buy replacement door locks directly from Volkswagen if you have the old part and know the year and model of your vehicle.

Use the screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the door handle to the inside door panel.

Remove the window control module on the door panel by pulling out the retaining screws on the module.

Wedge the trim removal tool underneath the top of the door panel, and pry the panel off the frame of the door.

Reach behind the door panel, and unhook the lock rod and latch cable from the back of the door handle. Grab the rod and cable, and pull up on them.

Use the socket wrench to remove the two bolts that hold the door lock assembly in place, then pull the door lock assembly off the outside of the vehicle.

For specific information about your Volkswagen model, consult the particular vehicle's manual (see Resource).
