If you use an RF modulator with your old TV set and need to add a digital converter box to it, it can add an extra challenge to your television set-up. This is especially true if you have extra devices like a VCR, DVD player or game console hooked up as well. But it's quite easy to use a converter box and RF modulator together on your TV set. You can even set it up so that you can use most of your devices on the same TV channel.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

Things you need

  • RF coaxial cable
  • RCA composite cable

  1. 1

Connect the digital converter box to your TV antenna, connecting the cable to the converter box's "IN" port. If the antenna doesn't have a built-in coaxial cable, use a spare cable to connect it. If you are using an analogue antenna, make sure it picks up UHF signals, because that's where the digital signals are located.

  2. 2

Attach the converter box's "OUT" port to the "IN" coaxial port of the RF modulator, with another coaxial cable. If you are using a VCR or other video recorder, connect the converter box to the input port of that device instead. Connect the recorder's output port to the "IN" port of the RF modulator.

  3. 3

Connect the RF modulator's "OUT" port to the TV set's coaxial input port. There will be only one such port in the back of the TV set, and it's the one to which you would have directly connected the antenna, VCR or converter box.

  4. 4

Link the RF modulator to a DVD player or game console if you have one for the TV. Connect that device's output to the RCA composite input ports on the modulator. This entails using the RCA cables with the yellow, white and red plugs.

  5. 5

Tune the TV set to channel 3 or 4--whichever one the converter box's channel switch is set to. With the current set-up, you can change channels on the converter box's tuner, play DVDs and record/play tapes on the VCR without changing the channel om the TV set.

Tips and warnings

  • You can connect the DVD player or game console directly to the TV instead of the modulator if the TV set has RCA composite plugs built in. If you do this, you must tune the TV to its auxiliary "video" channel to view the DVDs or play the games.
