How to open GIF files

Updated February 21, 2017

Graphics Interchange Format, or GIF file, is a series of different images combined together to make an animation file that loops. You may have found a GIF file that you've saved onto your computer, or you might have been sent a GIF file in an e-mail. GIF files can be opened using numerous software programs, but the GIF will not play in all programs. Open Office and QuickTime Player are two programs you can use to open GIF files.

Download and install the Open Office suite (see Resources).

Open the Open Office Draw application.

Click "File" and select "Open." A window will appear.

Search for and find the GIF file you want to open. Highlight this file and click "Open." The GIF file will open in the middle of the window.

Download and install the free version of QuickTime Player (see Resources).

Open QuickTime Player.

Click "File" and select "Open File." A window will open.

Search for and highlight the GIF file you want to open. Then click "Open." The GIF file will show up in the middle of the player.

Click "Play." The GIF file will begin playing in the middle of the QuickTime Player.
