How to get rid of a sore throat in a day

Updated November 21, 2016

You can feel it coming on like a nightmare. Your throat feels scratchy, you head feels a little heavy and you simply ignore the signals with the press of everyday activities. Every swallow, every drink brings a stinging feeling to your throat. Most colds don't offer up the intense experience of a sore throat that keeps a person awake at night. However, some do and these can be excruciatingly painful. Let's look at some ways to get rid of a sore throat in a day with home remedies, medication and lots of luck.

First realise that your sore throat comes from sinus drainage down the back of your throat. Stopping the sinus drainage will help improve your sore throat quickly. If you can take antihistamines or cold remedies, give those medications a try to alleviate the congestion. Any remedy you use after taking a medicine to stop the sinus drip will work better.

Take Tylenol or Ibuprofen in the recommended dosage to help with immediate pain.

Set yourself up with a humidity station. Your options include a hot shower, a humidifier or a facial steamer to cleanse the sinuses. Frankly, you've got to get the junk out of your head to fix your throat. Each remedy should be used 4 to 6 times each day to whack that sore throat hard. Stand in the shower for at least 10 minutes each time, breathing the warm moist air into your lungs. Place your face into the facial steamer with a towel over your head to free clogged sinuses. Blow your nose as much as possible during and after to get the mucus out of your head.

Mix a teaspoon of salt water into a cup of warm water and gargle with this mixture every 2 to 3 hours. Yes, it tastes nasty but salt really soothes a very sore throat. Your primary goal lies in healing the sore throat fast, not masking the soreness.

Purchase a Neti pot at the pharmacy. This little genie pot comes with packets of sea salt that you mix in a warm water solution to cleanse the sinuses. Follow all directions for creating the mixture and insert the tip of the spout into one nostril. Tip your head and allow the saline to run through your sinuses and out through the other nostril. Breath through your mouth while using the Neti pot. Have tissues handy after using this method but you will definitely need them.

Suck on cough drops based on the recommended dosage throughout the day. The menthol will help keep your sinuses free and help prevent excess sinus drainage down the back of your throat.

If you can't get rid of your sore throat in 5 days, see a doctor. Home remedies and over-the-counter medication work to alleviate minor colds and flu symptoms. Always follow your doctor's recommendations for choosing over-the-counter medications as well as his or her recommendations for dosage.
