How to get rid of flea beetles

Written by kayar sprang | 13/05/2017

Flea beetles are just one of several beetles that all fall under the same general category. This beetle gets its name because it jumps like fleas do. Flea beetles and their larva are destructive because they feed on the plants in your garden. Even if you don't see the actual beetle, a telltale sign that you may have a problem with flea beetles is seeing holes in the plant leaves.

Get rid of flea beetles immediately by spraying them with an insecticide like Diatect Garden & Floral Killer (see Resources). This chemical product kills beetles by paralysing and dehydrating them.

Sweep up flea beetles with a wet and dry vacuum cleaner. Just be careful not to suck up beneficial insects or plant leaves. When you're done, dump the canister far away from your garden. Repeat the sweeping when necessary.

Dust your garden plants with food grade diatomaceous earth to get rid of flea beetles. This pulverised rock kills beetles by cutting and dehydrating them.

Spray a natural insecticide like Garlic Barrier on your garden plants to eradicate flea beetles (see Resources). Since this product contains no toxic chemicals, it can be used in organic gardens. Simply mix Garlic Barrier together with water (follow the label directions for the proper ratio) and spray your plants for protection.

Place floating row covers over your garden rows right after you plant. To get rid of flea beetles, drape the material loosely over the garden allowing plenty of room for the plants to grow up. Secure the edges and the middle with rocks or wooden stakes. You'll need to remove the floating row covers when the flowers need pollinated.
