Place cards provide a traditional touch to a party or event. They are often used in formal settings, such as weddings or bridal showers, to identify the seating arrangement. They can also be used at formal dinner parties or other special occasions where you want pre-assigned seating. The cards themselves can be created on a computer, and printed off onto cardstock paper. The place card holders are used to individually hold each card.

Decide on a theme for your party or event. The place card holder should reflect that theme. Make one sample holder, and if you like the way it turns out, replicate for the number of place card holders you need. For example, if you are making place cards for a golfing event, you could use a golf ball as the base for your place card holder. Visit the dollar store, or look around for small, inexpensive objects that are in theme with your event.
Add a balancing base to your object if it rolls, which would happen with a golf ball. To do this with a golf ball, a penny or washer can be secured to the bottom of the ball using a hot glue gun.
Match an appropriate size butterfly clamp to the base you choose. A metal butterfly clamp resembles a twisted paper clip. You will want to affix it to the back or top of the base you choose, using a hot glue gun. Don't choose a clip that is too heavy for the base, or it will topple over.
Leave the "wings" of the butterfly clamp peeking up over the top of the base. The bottom portion of the clip should be hidden behind or tucked into the top of whatever base you decide to use.
Slip a place card into the top of the butterfly clamp, and make sure your holder doesn't topple over. If you are happy with how it turned out, make more for your party, one for each guest.
