How to Change the Battery in a Volkswagen Car Key

Updated March 23, 2017

If the battery in your Volkswagen car key dies, you have two options. You can take the key to a Volkswagen dealer or you can replace the battery yourself. The latter can be a little tricky because the manufacturer would prefer that you go back to the dealership. However, the do-it-yourself route is quicker and less expensive.

Flip out the metal key.

Wedge the screwdriver into the crack that runs on the outside of the key fob.

Carefully twist the screwdriver to pry apart the two halves of the key fob. You will see the battery inside.

Use the tip of the screwdriver to push out the old battery.

Insert the new battery in its place.

Snap the two halves of the key fob back together.

If you don't have a thin screwdriver, you can use the blade of a pocket knife.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat, thin screwdriver
  • 3V CR2032 battery
