Diamond brokers are experts in evaluating and grading diamonds. They act as a representative or agent for people who want to purchase high-quality diamonds. The broker does not own the diamonds but instead he locates the type of diamond a client wants by contacting wholesalers, diamond cutters, private sellers and auction houses. To become a reputable diamond broker requires extensive study and continued education to improve skills. Once you have accreditation in a few areas, you then seek work.

    Become a Graduate Gemologist (GG). The Gemological Institute of America offers a few programs that train people to become experts in appraising and grading diamonds. The Graduate Gemologist diploma program is the minimum requirement a person needs to become a diamond broker. The classes can be taken on-campus in California or online. The campus program lasts 26 weeks. Upon successful completion of the program, the student is designated a Graduate Gemologist.

    Become a Certified Gemologist Appraiser (CGA). This is a title offered by the American Gem Society. According to the website, "This title is the most highly regarded in the industry. Earning the CGA title requires more advanced training and experience in determining the value of gemstones and jewellery." A title-holder must be recertified every year by passing an exam. To maintain a title, a person must also work for an American Gem Society member firm. These firms are retail stores, jewellery manufacturers and diamond brokerage firms.

    Continue your education. The American Gem Society and Gemological Institute of America offer many specialised courses including a few on how to sell diamonds. These courses are invaluable for anyone who wants to become a diamond broker.
