Demolition experts tear down buildings and other structures to make room for new architectural projects. Smaller buildings, like houses, may require only a bulldozer or wrecking ball for demolition. Larger structures, like tall office buildings and bridges, often require explosive demolition. Demolition experts must carefully plan how to destroy a structure in a safe manner, as they often work with dangerous equipment like RDX and dynamite.

To become a demolition expert, you may first want to obtain background training in construction work. The best way to become an expert is to find a job at a demolition company and gain on-the-job training.

Skill level:
Moderately Challenging

  1. 1

Find a job with a local construction company to gain experience in this field. Demolition experts have skills in construction, carpentry, basic engineering and rigging. They also know how to use common power tools and hand tools.

  2. 2

Attend a technical college. Many community and technical colleges offer training in construction. Some offer a class or two in demolitions. Although attending college is not a requirement to become a demolitions expert, it will provide you with a good technical background to find a job in demolitions.

  3. 3

Find a job in the military. Various military branches, like the Army and Navy, train their own demolitions experts to dismantle explosives like IEDs and WMDs. Speak with a military recruiter on how to become a demolitions expert (called an explosive ordnance disposal specialist). You should demonstrate the ability to communicate well, plan and organise, stay calm under stress and use a computer.

  4. 4

Get a job with a demolitions company. The best way to become a demolitions expert is to gain on-the-job training with a professional demolition company and learn everything you can about demolitions. Try to find a mentor at your company who can teach you the skills and give you the knowledge to become a demolitions expert.

Tips and warnings

  • Stay calm and collected. Demolitions experts must work calmly under stress. Remaining calm is an essential part of working in dangerous job conditions.
  • Do not handle explosives without the proper training. Only professional demolition experts should work with such dangerous equipment.
