How to Polish the Edges of Glass

When cutting glass, it is important to be as accurate and clean as possible. Inaccurate or hasty cutting can lead to very rough edges that are almost impossible to smooth. However, even the most careful cut can leave tiny chips of glass along the edge, or can seem slightly rough. There are several tools available to polish the glass, including grozing pliers, carborundum stones, diamond smoothing pads and glass grinders.

Rub an unwanted piece of glass against the edge. This will not chip the glass, and it will remove the largest pieces from the edge.

Use grozing pliers to remove small chips from the edge of the glass. These pliers have serrated jaws that can easily snip off the unwanted pieces.

Smooth the edges with a carborundum stone or a diamond smoothing pad. The stone works more effectively on finer grades, and the pad works more effectively on the coarser grades. Diamond smoothing pads must be dipped in water before using. Both of these can be used more or less aggressively, and can often leave a polished finish on the edge of the glass.

Many people use glass grinders to smooth the edges of a piece of glass. Move the bit along the edge of the glass to polish it.


Make sure that your grinder is well lubricated before using it.


Always use safety glasses while working with glass, especially while grinding. Tiny shards of glass can harm the eye, even causing blindness.
