It is very convenient to buy a cake mix at the store, as it will save you half of the preparation time. The only problem is that it isn't as good as a homemade cake, so make your own cake mix ahead of time and store it for later use, just as you would with a store-bought mix.

Things you need
- 8 cups flour
- 5 cups sugar
- 4 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup baking powder
- 2 cups shortening
- 1/4 cup butter
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1 egg
Sift 8 cups of flour in to a large mixing bowl.
Add 5 cups of sugar, 4 tsp of salt and 1/4 of a cup of baking powder to the mixing bowl. Combine with a spoon.
Blend 2 cups of shortening and add it to the mixing bowl. Combine ingredients again with the spoon.
Pour the mix in to an airtight container. Label with that days date and place in the refrigerator. This homemade cake mix will last for 6 months without spoiling.
Add 1/4 cup of butter, 1 egg and 3/4 cup of milk to the homemade cake mix when you are ready to cook it. Mix until all ingredients are combined, pour into two cake pans and bake for 45 minutes at 176 degrees C.
Tips and warnings
- Add a small box of raisins and 2 tsp of cinnamon to make a raisin cake.
- Add some fruit and a splash of vanilla to make a fruit cake.
