"Microsoft Word" contains a special review feature that displays formatting marks. When turned on, the paragraph symbol appears at every line break, small dots represent spaces and an elongated arrow indicates tabs. These character markups do not appear on the printed version of the document, but they can clutter up the screen display if you accidentally activate the formatting mark option. Some users find the marks helpful, but others find them annoying.
Open Microsoft Word.
Click on the “Home” tab at the top of the window.
Click on the “Show/Hide” icon in the Paragraph section. This icon looks like a paragraph symbol. When you click the button, the paragraph symbols should disappear from your document.
Select the "Office" button at the top left of the program and select "Word Options."
Under the "Always Show These Formatting Marks on the Screen" section, remove checks from any of the boxes of formatting marks that you do not want to see.
