Place store bought ant traps in cabinets where plumbing enters the home. Also, chemical insecticides can be sprayed around the base of the foundation, as well as, around windows and doors outside of the home.
Remove all tree limbs, leaves and bushes that make contact with the home. Ants will travel across these natural highways and enter the home through an opening, such as a window, door or plumbing fixture.
Locate the point of entry. If ants are present in the home, the first thing to do is to follow the path of the ants to locate the point of entry. This will determine the location where the repellent will be applied.
Clean all kitchen counter tops thoroughly with soap and water. Remove food, spills and crumbs. Cleaning counters and removing garbage from the home will remove odour and eliminate ants and other insects.
Fill a squirt bottle with inexpensive vinegar. Wash all windowsills, doorways and counter tops with vinegar and water. The smell of vinegar will deter the ants from entering these areas. (Vinegar is a very natural and safe cleaner and repellent.)
Sprinkle ground cinnamon or ground cloves at the point of entry. Both are natural repellents that will help eliminate the invasion.
Use a powder to form a barrier to prevent the ants from entering the home. Try using baby powder, chilli powder, scouring powder, boric acid, borax, salt or diatomaceous earth. Locate the area where the ants are entering the home and sprinkle a line of powder across their path. This will deter the ants from crossing the line and entering the home.
Use petroleum jelly, If ants are entering the home through wires, such as electrical, telephone and cable wires, spread petroleum jelly along the wire at the entry point. Also, fill the hole, where the wire enters the home, with petroleum jelly. Since ants do not like to cross oil barriers, this will prevent any from entering the home through an outdoor utility hole.
To treat the foundation of the home, sprinkle chilli powder along the foundation around the perimeter of the home. Since mint is also a repellent, plant mint around the home to deter ants from crossing over and entering through the foundation.
