Whether you're making room for a new pattern or unloading personal items after a divorce, selling used china can be a great way to earn some easy money. If your fine china is rare and in good condition, you can make hundreds or even thousands of pounds on a complete set, depending on the desirability of the pattern.

  1. 1

Identify your china pattern. If you are unsure, buy or check a china pattern identification book. Some online china sellers offer pattern identification services if you cannot find the information you need.

  2. 2

Determine the market value of your china. Some old or rare patterns may be hard to price because of a lack of information in china pattern books and the absence of sales on the Internet and in china shops. Have your china appraised by an expert or search the inventories of online china replacement businesses to set a fair price.

  3. 3

Examine your china for damage and imperfections. No matter how you sell your china, you must provide the buyer with an accurate description of your dishes. Look for cracks, chips, discolouration and stains. Some online companies will not buy china unless it's in like-new condition. Others will accept minor damage, but pay a lower price.

  4. 4

Sell used china online or at a local retailer. If you can't find a local buyer, try online businesses that sell fine china replacement pieces. Many of these businesses buy china from other retailers, estate sales and individuals. You can also sell china through an online auction site like eBay or Craigslist.

  5. 5

Pack china carefully before posting. Wrap each piece in bubble wrap, foam or packing paper, add sufficient filler to the box and use more than one box if necessary. Mark the package with a fragile sticker and seal with packing tape. Buy insurance to cover the value of the china in case of damage.

Tips and warnings

  • Some companies who buy fine china also want crystal and silver.
  • If you have large quantities of a certain item, like a dinner plate, you may not be able to sell all of them at once. China replacement companies buy to replenish inventory, so they may not need each item in your set.
