How to disguise yourself
Subtlety is the key to a successful disguise. (Paul Tearle/Stockbyte/Getty Images)

The secret behind a convincing disguise is to keep it simple and try to look like everyone else. If you want to go incognito and remain unrecognisable, anything over-theatrical will arouse suspicion and draw attention to your efforts. Disguise yourself by changing your hair, clothing or the way you walk to stay below the radar. If you think you can switch gender without gaining a second glance from strangers, keep it subtle and dress like a regular guy or girl, not a pantomime dame or a bearded macho man.

Instructions

  1. 1

Transform your hair with a wig and choose an unassuming style if you want to blend in. Human hair products are very expensive but they are far more realistic and natural looking than cheap fancy dress type wigs. Mid range priced synthetic wigs are an effective alternative to real hair; they look natural and if you apply them correctly with a wig cap underneath, no-one should know that you're wearing a hairpiece. Search "cosplay wigs" on ebay for wigs used in Japanese manga and anime costumes. These are generally very good quality and reasonably priced although you will need to style them yourself.

  2. 2

Give yourself a style makeover and radically change your image to disguise yourself. For example, if you're normally a jeans and t-shirt person, switch to smart and sophisticated. The way you walk is a giveaway to anyone who knows you so make a conscious effort to hide your normal stance and gait. Walk confidently and don't shuffle around like someone trying to evade detection. Hats are an effective way to partially disguise your face; pick a fashionable style like a baseball cap that won't look out of place in a crowd.

  3. 3

Swap your gender and cross dress if you think you can cut it as a convincing member of the opposite sex. Wear normal clothes and stay away from anything revealing. Don't apply too much make up if you're going for a lady look and apply fake facial hair only if you are confident that it will look natural on you. Theatrical prosthetics such as eyebrows, blemishes, even noses and ears are readily available online; they come with instructions and tips on how to apply them effectively.
