Mexico is one of the world's premier travel destinations. Its climate is appealing for those looking for relaxing tropical holidays, which naturally involve a large amount of time on the beach. A subculture of beach life is nudist beaches. Nudist beaches are an increasingly popular worldwide phenomenon. While still frowned upon in more conservative societies, in other societies the boundaries are being stretched and stretched as attitudes change and inhibitions decrease. Mexico is no exception to this.

    Given that all beaches in Mexico are federal property and nudity is not allowed, it may seem tricky to find a nudist beach in Mexico. However there are places where nudity is commonplace, including on some beaches and resorts, and also some hidden and secluded spots out of the way of the public.

    Zipolite has a reputation as one of Mexico's primary nudist hotspots. It is located in the south of the country, near Puerto Angel. It is a modest, unimposing resort, with few expensive hotels, with accommodation being more along basic and affordable lines. It has a made its name as something of a hippy paradise, with a relaxed atmosphere and palm trees lined beaches with hammocks. The 1.5km long beach, both the western end and the eastern end boast sections where nudity is common

    The Riveira Maya is also home to a few areas where nudists are known to congregate. Hidden Beach resort is one such place. Lying on the coast one hour south of Cancun, this resort caters to an adult only crowd and has 42 ocean front suites in a secluded location. As well as the private beach, the resort includes a number of other activities including pools, hot tubs, gourmet dining and night time entertainment, music and dancing.

    Cabanas Copal Hotel is a rustic accommodation located in the Tulum region of Mexico, and enjoys an idyllic setting in a clearing surrounded by tropical forest. In this clearing is a popular nudist beach, which is actually overlooked by the hotel. On this beach, nudism is discreet in that people cover up walking to and from the hotel, but is the norm. Besides nudist sunbathing, there are numerous other white sandy beaches to discover, as well as Mayan Ruins and freshwater pools perfect for swimming and snorkelling.

Tips and warnings

  • Be cautious when swimming in the sea. Always check the conditions before stepping in, strong currents and riptides can be very dangerous.
  • When sunbathing on beaches, do not leave valuables unattended.
