In Minecraft, items of the same type stack together automatically in your inventory as you pick them up or create them. This is helpful in most circumstances, but eventually you'll need to split a stack of items into two or more, either for crafting purposes or to give some items to a friend. The game provides two different ways of splitting a stack; which works best for you depends on the circumstances.

Instructions

    Halving a stack

  1. 1

Press "E" to open your inventory.

  2. 2

Right click the stack you want to halve. Doing this picks up half the stack, leaving the other half in the original inventory slot. If there is an odd number of items in the stack, the half stack you pick up will have one extra item.

  3. 3

Left click an empty inventory slot to deposit the half stack there.

Splitting a specific number of items

Press "E" to open your inventory.

  2. 2

Left click the stack you want to split to pick it up.

  3. 3

Right click an empty inventory slot to deposit a single item there.

  4. 4

Continue right clicking to add more items, one by one, to the newly-created stack. Once you are done, left click an empty inventory slot to deposit what remains of the original stack there.
