Moving between realms with a “World of Warcraft” character can rarely be done for free. They were originally commonplace as special offers provided by Blizzard, the game’s creator, but since then have only really been offered when some servers were particularly busy. One example of this is in 2012, when the “Mists of Pandaria” expansion pack came out, and the flood of users onto the servers prompted an offer of a free migration onto less populated ones. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the time you have to pay £15 (at time of writing – February 2013) to transfer your character.

Determine the character you want to transfer. Your character must be at least at level 10 (or level 60 for Death Knights) to be transferable. There are also limits on the amount of gold you are allowed to have, depending on the level of your character. For characters up to level 30, 300 is the limit, it’s 1,000 between levels 31 and 50, 5,000 up to level 70, 20,000 up to level 80 and 50,000 for any higher levels. You will need to get rid of some gold if your character is over the limit for its level.
Finish your session on World of Warcraft if the game is active. You have to wait 20 minutes before you can attempt the character transfer.
Click on the “Account” link in the top right of the screen to access the “Account Management” page.
Choose the relevant World of Warcraft license from the options under “Your Game Accounts” on the right of the screen. This is the license which holds the character you wish to transfer.
Click on the “Character and Guild Services” option from the ribbon at the bottom of the screen.
Select “Character Transfer” from the options listed onscreen. You will see a list of realms and characters on the right. Select your current realm and the character you wish to transfer.
Choose the realm or account (which has to be owned by you) that you want to transfer the character to and follow the onscreen instructions. You will need to make the payment for the service, and may have to choose an alternative name for your character if your existing one is taken in the new realm. Make sure the name you choose is in no way offensive, and check the official naming policy (see Resources) to ensure your chosen name is suitable.
Wait until you receive an email confirming the completion of the transfer before you attempt to log in with your chosen character. This could result in the transfer failing, so be patient.
