Kitchen and dining room tables have a few standard heights to choose from and each height has an associated height of chair that goes with it. These standards help assure buyers that people sitting at the tables will have enough lap room.

Kitchen Table

A typical kitchen table or dining room table has a surface between 28 and 30 inches above the ground. The exact height depends on the style of the table, with more formal dining tables closer to 30 inches and informal dining tables averaging about 29 inches tall.

Bar-Style Tables

Bar-style kitchen tables come in two primary heights. Some are 36 inches above the ground, which is the same height as kitchen counters. These types of tables are often part of a kitchen island. A full-height bar table is 42 inches above the ground.

Chair Height

The height of the chair should be about 12 inches less than the height of the table. Therefore, chairs at traditional 30-inch tables should measure 18 inches. Bar stool seats are either 24 inches or 30 inches above the ground, depending on the height of the bar-style table.
