Mites are tiny insects that can cause problems around your home by injuring your plants or causing allergic reactions in people sensitive to them. You can help keep them away from your family with natural repellents.

For Plants

If mites are damaging your plants by feeding on them, use a spray made from garlic juice to repel them. The spray does not kill the mites, but can help to protect your plants if you have had trouble in the past, according to the AgriLife Extension of Texas A&M University.

In Home

Repel dust mites by purchasing a natural rubber mattress. The milk of the rubber tree contains an antibacterial substance that acts as a natural repellent against dust mites, according to "Knack Green Decorating & Remodeling." When you wash your bedding and other linens, add a couple teaspoons of eucalyptus oil to the wash water. Eucalyptus oil kills and repels dust mites.

While it is not possible to eliminate all dust mites from your home, reduce your exposure to them by replacing carpeting with tile, wood or laminate flooring. When you clean your home, mist your furniture with a solution of water and two drops of eucalyptus oil in a spray bottle. This will help keep dust mites away from the places you and your family gather, according to "Health and Wellness."
