Hula hooping is a low cost way to tone your lower body and abdomen while burning calories. According to Fabio Comana, MA, MS, an exercise physiologist for the American Council on Exercise, hula hooping helps to promote balance and improve core and trunk flexibility.

It is important to select the correct sized hula hoop to effectively tone your body. Hula hoops for the average sized adult should measure from the floor to the top of the hoop between 36 and 42 inches.

Hula hoops range in weight from 0.454kg. up to 2.27kg. Weighted hula hoops are available for purchase at sporting good retailers to provide a more dynamic workout. Smaller and lighter hula hoops require more energy to keep the hoop going.

In addition to providing a low impact aerobic workout, hula hooping can increase flexibility in your back and tone the stomach, arms, legs and glutes. Core strengthening can be achieved using slow, sustained rhythms while hooping.
