Sinus congestion sometimes results from the foods we eat. Certain foods are prone to cause excess mucous secretions in the body and interfere with proper breathing and overall health. Making small dietary changes can help prevent or eliminate acute or chronic sinus problems.
Dairy and Congestion
Dairy is a big culprit in causing sinus congestion. Milk increases mucous production and contributes to sinusitis. Whole milk can be most problematic, but skimmed milk, cheese, yoghurt and ice cream can be as equally problematic.
Avoid eating sugar, or at least limit your consumption considerably. Sugar causes congestion and also depletes immune function. Individuals who suffer from sinus inflammation usually experience symptoms when the immune system is overburdened.
You don't need to have a confirmed food allergy to experience uncomfortable symptoms such as sinus congestion after eating culprit foods. Dairy, wheat, soy and corn are common food allergens that can cause reactions in some individuals.
Avoid all dairy consumption when you're experiencing sinus congestion. Limit dairy consumption before bedtime when congestion may worsen. Begin eating dairy products only after you've been symptom-free for a few weeks, and limit quantities of milk, yoghurt, cheese and ice cream to remain symptom-free.
Eat less prepackaged foods to reduce overall consumption of wheat and soy, since these are common ingredients in boxed products. Drink plenty of water each day to stay well hydrated and keep your sinus passageways moist.
