Procurement is defined as the process of acquiring goods and services from a buyer or seller. A procurement supervisor manages a staff of contracting specialists or buyers and provides procedures for the acquisition of goods and services. According to the Bureau of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook 2010-11 Edition, overall employment of purchasing managers, buyers and purchasing agents is expected to increase seven per cent through 2018.


The procurement administrator is responsible for daily operations of a procurement division, function or branch. The administrator supervises personnel and reviews contract requirements when soliciting goods and services from vendors. There are times when the procurement administrator will conduct meetings based on special proposals to ensure that vendors have the right qualifications, such as bonding and capabilities to provide goods or services.

Job Features and Functions

The procurement administrator reports to senior management concerning the fiscal capabilities to purchase goods or services. The administrator also conducts meetings concerning personnel issues, hiring of new staff and the technological needs of the procurement branch, section or division. He also assigns, supervises and reviews the work of staff responsible for carrying out procurement operations.

Work Environment

A procurement administrator works 40 hours a week. She meets with senior management, offers instruction to procurement personnel and makes visits to vendors and buyers. She also constantly reviews transaction exception reports and weekly reports on bid requests, and updates existing procurement policies.

Required Skills

The procurement administrator must have good analytical skills and be able to examine important contracting issues pertaining to contract establishment and awards. He must have skills in computer applications and understand the procurement information system used by operations to provide detailed reporting functions. Cost analysis and budgeting is a critical component and skill needed to be an effective procurement administrator. Written and oral communication skills must indicate a high level of knowledge in the procurement process.

Education and Salary Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in business administration is preferred. According to, a procurement administrator's average annual salary, with five to nine years of experience, is between the ranges of £26,719 to £41,093 as of 2010.
