Acne-prone skin can be difficult to conceal. As much as you want to hide pesky pimples, you don't want to further irritate them with a lot of make-up. There are several over-the-counter concealers on the market that effectively mask blemishes. Some are medicated to provide stronger acne prevention.

Proactiv Medicated Concealer

Trusted acne brand Proactiv manufactures a medicated concealer to fight blemishes while it conceals. The formula is oil-free and contains sulphur, the same ingredient in Proactiv's Refining Mask spot treatment. Sulphur helps the pimple to heal while absorbing oil. It also helps to prevent further breakouts in the area treated, and can prevent future scarring. One 7g tube costs approximately £11, as of 2010.

Clinique Acne Solutions Clearing Concealer

Clinique's Acne Solutions line was developed by a dermatologist expressly for the purpose of treating acne without prescription medication. As part of the Acne Solutions line, this cream concealer promises to fight blemishes while providing natural-looking coverage that never cakes. This oil-free concealer is infused with a 1 per cent salicylic acid solution; most acne-fighting products contain a 2 per cent solution. As a result, this is gentler yet still effective. Available in three shades to match a variety of skin tones, and a green to reduce the appearance of redness in blemishes. It costs approximately £8.

Murad Acne Treatment Concealer

Murad Acne Treatment Concealer won "Allure" magazine's Editors Choice Award for Best Concealer for Blemishes. This stick concealer contains salicylic acid to fight blemishes as it covers them up. The concealer is oil-free, so it won't cause further breakouts. Murad says that in clinical studies, 86 per cent of users saw clearer skin within two weeks. This concealer comes in three shades to match a variety of skin tones: light, medium and medium dark. It costs about £13 per stick.

Physicians Formula Conceal Rx Physicians Strength Concealer

Physicians Formula claims this lasts up to 12 hours. This creamy concealer contains no medication, but is extra strong to provide lasting blemish coverage. A little goes a long way; squeeze a bit onto your hand and dab onto blemishes. Blend until the blemish is concealed. This product comes in five shades, including a soft green and soft yellow to counteract the redness of pimples. Cost per tube is around £5.

Dermablend Smooth Indulgence Concealer

If you want a heavy concealer that doesn't contain medication, another good option is Dermablend Smooth Indulgence Concealer. This heavy concealer covers blemishes and stays on skin without fading. It also works for concealing undereye circles, scars, rosacea and birthmarks. It is available in five shades, and costs approximately £13.
