When it comes to planning a wedding, decorations play an important role. The decor for the wedding often sets the tone for the event and evokes the theme of the occasion. You can choose from a variety of items when selecting wedding decorations for a church altar.

Focal Point

Weddings have many memorable components that make the occasion special. Decorations can add flair and definition to a wedding and for this reason, many couples view choosing decor as one of the many choices of the wedding planning process. For a church wedding, altar decorations serve as the inanimate focal point of a wedding ceremony. They can be elaborately arranged, or modestly displayed.

Altar decorations are available in many forms and sizes. For instance, you will often see floral arrangements as altar decorations. Such arrangements are usually created by a designated florist. For some church weddings, candles are used in addition to or in lieu of flowers. Some couples also choose to eliminate altar decorations altogether. It is all about preference.

Traditional Elements

A wedding could be considered to be a traditional occasion, thus often incorporating family traditions into several components of the ceremony. For example, a bride chooses to use her mother’s wedding flowers and incorporates those flowers into her altar decorations. Or consider the bride who adores the Christmas season and decides to make use of poinsettias for her altar decorations.

To Decorate or Not to Decorate

When it comes to altar decorations–whether eliminated or included–the possibilities are endless.

Set the Tone for a Church Wedding

Whether elaborate or elegantly simple, altar decorations can add welcoming elements to a wedding ceremony. Such decorations can also distract in a negative and positive manner, making the choosing process an important one when wedding planning.

Creative Themes and Ideas

In addition to traditional decorations, couples sometimes opt to use their imagination to create themes for decorating an altar. For example, if the bride wanted to honour her Asian heritage, she could arrange the altar with orchids, fresh lotus plants, lanterns or bamboo. Or if you are interested in the contemporary look, you could combined chic drapery with Swarovski crystals to create a modern appeal.

Other themes or creative ideas to consider for altar decorations:

Valentine’s Day theme – a heart-shaped arch, adorned with red and pink roses (under which the couple would stand during the ceremony)

Caribbean theme – ocean blue canopy at the altar, with traces of exotic flowers underneath.

Tuscan theme – Five free-standing basket arrangements at the altar, each including richly coloured florals, with a hint of fresh grapes and leaves.
