Seeds to Eat That Promote Hair Growth

The key seeds for your hair growth are flax seeds, sunflower seeds, fenugreek seeds and grape seed extract. These seeds contain essential fatty acids along with many vitamins, minerals and protein necessary for your hair's health and growth. Include raw, unsalted seeds in your diet daily.

Dr. Melina Jampolis, nutrition specialist, suggests limiting seeds to one-fourth cup daily, especially if you're weight conscious. Vegetarians and vegans can eat more since seeds are a good protein source.

Flax Seeds

Consume three tablespoons per day of ground flax seeds for your hair growth and shine. Andrew Weil, M.D., says including flax seeds can prevent hair loss and encourage hair regrowth.

Flax seeds are the best plant source of essential fatty acids, especially omega-3. They are small, hard and flat seeds ranging from dark brown to golden in colour. Grind whole flax seeds with a coffee grinder or blender, or purchase flax meal. Whole flax seeds just pass through the body.

Sprinkle ground flax seeds on your salads and cereal. Add them in your smoothies, or mix them in bread before baking.

Buy flax seeds in bulk at a health store for an inexpensive supply. Store flax seeds in airtight containers at room temperature for one year.

Sunflower Seeds

Eat raw sunflower seeds to provide you with everything you need to encourage healthy hair growth. Sunflower seeds are high in protein, biotin, potassium, zinc, iron, B vitamins, vitamin E, magnesium and calcium. They are also high in omega-6 fatty acids.

Enjoy sunflower seeds as they are or sprinkle them on salads and steamed vegetables. Mix sunflower seeds into breads before baking.

Purchase raw sunflower seeds inexpensively in bulk at health food stores.

Fenugreek Seeds

Take fenugreek seeds in natural or capsule form to promote hair growth. Fenugreek seeds are a good source of protein, as well as a source of iron and vitamins A, B1 and C.

Restore hair growth using fenugreek seeds externally. Place fenugreek seeds in the sun for seven days, mix it with extra virgin coconut oil and massage this into your scalp and hair. Leave it on for 10 minutes and wash it out. Indian beautician, Dr. Smitha Yavagal, says this will prevent hair loss.

Grape Seed Extract

Take grape seed extract to boost your hair growth. The standard dosage is 150-200 mg daily. Find it in health food stores or online. Grape seed extract is made from the seeds of red grapes.

A study by Japanese researcher, Waseda has shown that grape seed extract, a patented treatment for hair loss, is a good inhibitor of Protein Kinase C (PKC), which destroys hair cells.

American Indians used grape seed extract by applying it to the scalp to stimulate hair growth.

Tips and Warnings

Consult your doctor before starting any supplement regimen.

Do not consume flax seeds if you are pregnant. This is to avoid possible birth defects or abortion.

Expect temporary flatulence and diarrhoea when eating flax seeds for the first time.

Drink lots of water when eating flax seeds to prevent them from backing up.

Make sure the grape seed extract you buy is standardised to 95% OPC content for the best results.

Do not take fenugreek seeds or any form of fenugreek if you are pregnant.

See a doctor if you have an allergic facial swelling after taking fenugreek seeds.
