Nutrisystem is a diet program and a brand of foods that is only available for purchase from the Nutrisystem company online or over the phone. The premise of the diet is that all of the meals--including breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks--are comprised of Nutrisystem foods, which are specially designed to promote weight loss.

The purpose of the Nutrisystem diet is to help people lose of all ages to lose weight without having to think too much about meal planning. Obesity is associated with health problems like diabetes and heart disease. The Nutrisystem diet claims to also reduce the risk of diabetes and control blood sugar levels for people who are already diabetic.

Diet plans

People who join the Nutrisystem diet plan do not all get the same exact foods posted to their door. According to the Nutrisystem website, there are several different diet plans from which to choose. There are specific plans and foods for both males and females, as well as a meal plan for people over the age of 65, for diabetics and for vegetarians.

Each meal plan contains different food options and can meet special dietary needs. For example, the diabetic meal plan contains foods rich in protein and whole grains. The vegetarian foods contain no meat products.

Meal options

Since every food eaten while on the Nutrisystem diet is a packaged, pre-portioned, shelf-stable meal, it is essential the meals are varied and taste good. The Nutrisystem website claims to offer thousands of different meal options. For example, breakfast choices include packaged granola or blueberry muffins.

Snack options include chocolate cake or barbecue soy crisps. For lunch and dinner, there are meals as chicken with dumplings and macaroni and cheese.

The Nutrisystem diets generally supply anywhere from 1,200 to 1,500 calories a day. In order to meet such a low number of calories yet still provide breakfast, lunch, dinner and two snacks per day, the meals and snacks are in small portions. Some dieters find the meals too small to be filling, while others find them sufficient.

The Nutrisystem diet may work in the short term while the dieter eats the low-calorie diet, but many people have trouble sticking with it since it's not designed for lifetime use.
