The University of Iowa was the first school in the United States to teach creative writing at the university level; the first class was taught in 1897. Graduates of the university's two-year Writer's Workshop M.F.A. program have won a collective 17 Pulitzer Prizes. The workshop grants participants master's degrees in fiction or poetry. The University of Virginia, Charlottesville, creative writing program is ranked second in the country by Education Portal and third by Poets & Writers. The highly exclusive M.F.A. program accepted 12 of 630 applicants for the 2010-2011 academic year. Courses are offered in poetry, fiction and short story writing, as well as desktop publication.
