The solar plexus, as it is known in medical terms, is a network of intersecting nerves located behind the stomach in the middle of the torso's upper half. This nerve centre contains two clusters of nerve fibres known as the solar ganglia which house neurons that connect to the stomach, liver, gallbladder, spleen, kidney and intestines. For this reason, the solar plexus is sometimes known as the "abdominal brain" and is sensitive. While the nerves themselves can not be strengthened like a muscle, strong abdominal muscles protect this area and exercises out of Taoist, Chakra and Yoga traditions exist.
Place both hands over your solar plexus, which is at the base of the ribcage in the centre, while standing or sitting. With your body and head facing forward, inhale, feeling the air enter your lungs.
Exhale and press your hands inward and up, into your solar plexus, while turning your head and upper body to the left as far as possible. At the same time, turn your pelvis to the right.
Inhale while returning to the starting position, slowly releasing your hands during the inhale to their starting position of gently resting on your stomach.
Repeat the process, except on the second time turn your head and upper body all the way to the right and the pelvis to the left.
Concentrate on the solar plexus area during the exercise and repeat the exercise for both sides of the body four to 36 times.
Lie down on your back and place both hands under your buttocks, which supports the lower back during the exercise.
Lift both legs off of the ground by roughly 6 inches, pointing your toes.
Lift your head, trying to look at your toes, and hold the position for 10 to 20 seconds.
Take deep breaths while holding the pose.
