How to remove chili hot sauce stains

Chilli hot sauce has several ingredients that can cause stains, often red in colour, on fabrics it comes in contact with. The red colour usually comes from hot peppers used to make the sauce, which may include chilli, cayenne and jalapeño peppers. The hot pepper in the sauce includes acidic oil, tomato sauces can leave a sugar residue, and other ingredients can leave a grease stain. Methods must be used to remove all types of stains that are produced by chilli hot sauce.

Remove excess chilli hot sauce from the fabric immediately. Blot the stain with a clean white paper towel. Avoid rubbing, as that can set the stain.

Cover the stain with baking powder, cornstarch or baby powder to absorb the stain and let it sit for 15 minutes or longer. Rinse with cold water; using hot or warm water can set chilli hot sauce stains permanently.

Mix 1 tsp of mild clear or white neutral dish detergent in 1 cup of cold water. Blot the stain with the solution to remove grease residue. You can also use a clear degreasing dish detergent directly on the stain as a pre-soak. Apply the detergent to the chilli hot sauce stain and let it sit for up to an hour.

Mix 1/3 cup of white vinegar with 2/3 cup of water and apply the solution to the stain to remove any sugar or acid residue. If a brown spot from sugar residue remains, blot the stain with 3 per cent hydrogen peroxide solution until the spot is removed.

Launder the stained garment with an enzymatic washing powder that will remove the remaining protein in the stain. Check the garment carefully after laundering to make sure the stain is completely removed. If any stain remains, re-treat.
