How to Clean Colored Suede

Updated April 17, 2017

Suede is a type of leather material with a textured surface. It is dyed many colours and used for purses, shoes, jackets, hats and accessories. Suede is easily stained and scuffed and is difficult to clean. Some suede products are treated to be waterproof, but those treatments do not completely protect against stains, dirt and water. Clean your suede regularly to maintain its texture and colour.

  1. Remove sticky or dried substances with a clean pencil eraser. Rub the substance gently until it falls off. Dust off any loose pieces of the substance.

  2. Dip a rag in white vinegar and dab at stains until they disappear.

  3. Blot the fabric with a rag to absorb any excess liquid from cleaning or spills. If the fabric is very wet, lay a rag or several pieces of paper towel on top of the fabric and then place something flat and heavy on top of the rag for 10 to 15 minutes.

  4. Steam the suede with a hand steamer. Hold the steamer at least 6 inches away from the fabric. Allow the suede to air dry.

  5. Rub the fabric gently with a rag or a suede brush to fluff the suede nap once it is dry.

  6. Tip

If the suede colour fades drastically, it can be dyed again by a professional.

Never use heat to dry suede.
