Garry's Mod is a third-party modification for Valve Software's Half-Life 2 video game. The modification is designed as a "sandbox" style game, featuring open-ended game play in which a clear set of objectives is not defined by the developer, but the gamer. Users are free to create and destroy virtually anything, and even have the capability to create game scenarios for others to enjoy. When creating new objects in Garry's Mod, you can view thumbnail images of weapons in their creation menu know as "Spawn Icons." These images give a preview of the weapon you are placing in-game, and can be created and edited using third-party tools designed for Garry's Mod.
Select a weapon (known as SWEPs) for which you want to create your Spawn Icon. There are a number of sites that offer Garry's Mod weapons to download for free, including the Garry's Mod Website and FPS Banana. Download and save the weapon in the following folder: C:/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/
Download and Install the VTFEdit software. Follow the on-screen directions of the installation application and use the default settings.
Select the image that you want to use as your Spawn Icon. Create a new one using an image-editing program, or find an image that you want to use on the Internet and save the file to the downloaded weapon folder's "Entities" directory. (C:/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/
Open the VTFEdit software and click "File" and then "Import" from the top pull-down menu. A file browser window will open in which you can select the image you want to use as your Spawn Icon. Browse to the "Entities" folder from Step 3 and select the Spawn Icon image you want to use. Click "OK" to import the image into the VTFEdit Software.
Click "File" and then "Save" from the top pull-down menu in VTFEdit. This will have the VTFEdit Software save the image file into the ".vtf" format, which is an image format that is readable by Garry's Mod. Name the file the same name as the
