Instructions for a ribbon-edged funeral flower wreath

A ruffled ribbon frame around the base of a funeral wreath adds a touch of elegance to the floral piece. Attach ribbon that is at least 7.5 cm (3 inches) wide to the ring, heart, pillow or cross form to cover the unattractive foam edge. Choose pastel-coloured, tricoloured patriotic or white ribbon, which is commonly used to frame the shape of the wreath form. You will find that it is easier to attach the ribbon to the foam before adding the silk or fresh flowers to complete the funeral wreath.

Set the wreath form on a flat work surface. Pull a 90 cm (3 feet) of the ribbon from the roll without cutting it off.

Place the end of the ribbon onto the top of the form about 1.3 cm (1/2 inch) from the outer edge. The width of the ribbon will extend out from the wreath form. Secure the ribbon to the form by pressing a greening pin into the ribbon and straight down through the top of the foam. A metal greening pin looks like an oversized staple with extended legs.

Put the index finger of your right hand onto the top of the secured ribbon about 2.5 cm (1 inch) from the cut edge. Place the thumb of your left hand under the ribbon.

Lift you thumb with the ribbon draped over it. The remainder of your left hand will lie on top of the ribbon that extends toward the roll. An upside down U shape will tent over the thumb. Hold it with the thumb and index finger of your left hand, and push it toward the right-hand index finger.

Pull your right index finger away from the ribbon, and press the U shape flat against the foam. Insert a greening pin horizontally into the overlapped ribbon. This is your first ruffle on the wreath.

Place your right index finger on the top of the ribbon at a spacing point 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inches) away from the first ruffle. Form the second ruffle, and insert a greening pin to hold it in place. Make sure that the pin secures the ruffled fold-over and the flat underlying ribbon against the foam.

Continue to hand form and secure the ruffles around the wreath shape. If you are securing ribbon to a form with corners, such as a shield, anchor or cross, make a ruffle on one end of the corner. Curve the ribbon, and secure it at the centre of the corner. Then make a second ruffle at the other side of the corner. Each corner will have a half-circle shape.

Cut the ribbon when the wreath has been completely framed with the material. Secure the end of the ribbon with a greening pin to keep it from pulling away from the wreath.

Cut the stems of the fresh flowers with a sharp knife or wired stems of silk flowers with wire cutters. The stems should be 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inches) long.

Insert the stems of the flowers into the foam to fill the area completely inside of the ribbon frame. Be sure to cover the edge of the ribbon to hide the greening pins with the petals.
