Gloss Paint Stain Removal on Carpet

Updated February 21, 2017

Removing paint stains from carpet can be a tedious task, fraught with potential dangers. Aggressive removal techniques can lead to permanent damage to the carpet fibres. Fortunately, if you need to remove gloss paint from your carpet, you should have an easier time, as coatings with glossy sheens tend to come away from carpeting much easier than flat finishes.

Often, simple lubrication is enough to loosen gloss paint from carpet. Apply a few drops of olive oil to the stain. After 20 to 30 seconds, you may be able to work the paint loose, using a cloth rag.

You may need a solvent to clean stubborn gloss paint stains from carpet. Dampen a rag with turpentine, and massage the stain in a circular motion. Don't mistake petroleum-based solvents like white spirit, lacquer thinner and paint stripper for turpentine, which is a tree-based solvent that won't affect the carpet's colour.

Heavy-duty carpet cleaners will often melt gloss paint, causing the stain to bond further. Don't use these cleansers, or you may end up with permanent damage.
