While typically an adult issue, some children do suffer from foot pain. There are several ways to prevent and treat plantar fasciitis, which is a common condition that causes discomfort in the feet of adults and children.
The lines of tissue that reach from the heel bone to the toes are called the plantar fascia. Stretching of this tissue can form small tears, which causes the irritation and pain associated with plantar fasciitis in children.
The tears that cause the pain in the plantar fascia occur over time and, as a result, need time for healing. Children with plantar fasciitis often experience pain that is exacerbated with physical activity.
Children with plantar fasciitis will feel pain on the bottom of the heal that sometimes will extend to the toes. Another common sign of plantar fasciitis is that the pain occurs as soon as weight is put on the foot after a period of inactivity has occurred.
Strengthening and supporting the bottom of the foot will help decrease the pain. Massaging the bottom of the foot and taking over-the-counter pain relievers will also aid in diminishing discomfort.
Stretching and warming up before exercising is extremely important. Quality shoes that provide proper foot support can also help to prevent plantar fasciitis in children.
