DIY Wine Racks

Updated February 21, 2017

There are many places you can buy a wine rack, but if you want something custom-made, you can make your own wine rack. By using pre-made shelving and storage units, plus a few additional supplies from your home supply store, you can have a custom wine rack sooner than you might think. Remember that the standard wine bottle is 11 1/2 inches tall and 3 inches in diameter, so choose supplies accordingly. Also, wine should be stored on its side or neck down to keep the cork moist, so keep this in mind when designing your wine rack.

Shoe Rack

A shoe rack also is a way to store and display wine. Some shoe racks even look like they were made for wine. Use a shoe rack as your base, alter the colours accordingly, and you can have a wine rack that costs very little. Buy a shoe rack that looks like a cubbyhole with several small square spaces. Retailers, such as Target, sell these types of shoe racks. Buy a wooden rack in a wood tone that matches your home, or you can paint and stain it yourself. Many of these types of shoe racks can be mounted to the wall, so you can make it a piece of decor in your home.

PVC Pipes

PVC pipe is another material you can use to make your own wine rack. At your local hardware store, purchase PVC pipes with a large enough opening that you can slide the wine bottles inside easily. To do this, make sure the PVC pipe is at least 4 inches in diameter so you will have space surrounding the bottle. After you have bought enough PVC pipe for the bottles of wine you want to store, use wood or hardwood to construct a box that will comfortably hold all the wine. To store 28 bottles, use a box that is 26 3/4 inches wide, 11 1/2 inches deep, and 18 3/4 inches tall. After you have constructed the box, paint or stain in any colour you like. You can also paint the PVC pipes, or you can leave them white.

Shelf Cube

Most furniture stores and department stores such as Ikea, Target and Wal-Mart sell shelf cubes. They can be stacked on top of one another to make shelves of any size, or you can use them separately. Simply measure the height, width and depth of the cube, and buy pieces of plywood at a home supply store. Create separate spaces inside the cube by placing one piece of plywood horizontally across the cube, separating the top and bottom sections into individual cubbies. Use powerful permanent glue or a staple gun to keep the plywood stable inside.
