Kits for Making Stained Glass

Updated April 17, 2017

Making stained glass can be an extremely fun and rewarding hobby. Fortunately, there are many kits available for purchase online that contain all the materials, tools and instructions necessary for making your own stained glass crafts. These crafts can be completed by a practised amateur.

There are two broad types of stained glass kits available. These are beginner kits and advanced kits. Beginner kits come with glass already cut, sized and grounded for you. If you are a beginner or you are unsure whether this is the hobby for you, start with one of these kits. More advanced stained glass enthusiasts should check out the advanced kits. These kits contain an array of tools so you can do your own cutting, sizing and grounding. While more difficult to use, these kits allow for a lot more creativity and freedom than beginner kits.

Kit Contents

Beginner kits typically come with pretreated glass that must be soldered into the desired shapes. The soldering iron is often included, as is copper foil, which is applied to the glass edges. More advanced kits come with a glass cutter, glass pliers, a soldering iron, a flux brush and copper foil.

Availability and Cost

A quick Internet search will turn up a great many kits available for purchase. While kits typically contain the aforementioned components, they differ slightly from company to company. As of March 2011, depending on the type of kit desired, they range in cost between £52 and £195.
