Hi, I'm Marci Degman, the aspiring gardener, and today we're going to talk about organization and structure of plants. Now, the hardest part for most people is to know where to begin when they start to design a garden area and the best way I like to start is by thinking of layers. Now you've got to have a structure meaning you want something that's going to be there throughout the year like trees, woody shrubs, maybe they're statutes, maybe they're bird baths, things that are going to leave structure in your garden all year but how do you put them and how do you organize them. Now, what I always like to do is start from the top layer. In this case I've got a very mature fir tree in the background. So, that's my first layer and that's where I start my plan. The next thing I want to do is pick plants that are going to grow up taller and meet that tree. So the next structural level is this flowering currant and here I've got an elderberry which will probably reach about 18 feet tall. So, eventually you're going to have your tall fir tree, your 18 foot elderberry and this currant here is probably topping out, not going to get a whole lot bigger so that's your next layer and then you come down into the lower layer and you want to have everything from short shrubs to tall perennials to ground covers. So it takes a lot of the guesswork out if you start from the top or you start from the bottom. So when you begin to organize your structure, just find your starting point, move up to the next layer and choose plants that are grouped well together that look good together, that fill all the layers of your garden. And that's how you organize structure.
