Grill grates are naturally susceptible to rust due to being primarily stored outdoors. Clean rust from cast iron grill grates with help from a maintenance technician in this free video clip.
I'm Joshua Clement with Lighty Contractors. Today, I'm going to show you how to remove rust from a cast iron grill gate. For this you're going to need a couple items, a brush, some olive oil, a copper scour, a grill brush or metal brush. You're going to want to take the brush, put some olive oil on it, and brush it onto your grill gate. Now the reason we are using olive oil is because cast iron is actually very sensitive to chemicals that you put on it. The olive oil helps to protect the metal from any damage. Take your wire brush and scrub. Now depending on the level of rust that has accumulated onto your cast iron grill gate, this might take a little bit more elbow grease. To get down on the sides, take your scour, and push down firmly. Now before you cook on this you want to make sure you get it up to at least 150 degrees that way it can kill anything that is left on the grill gate. You want to make sure that you do this over the entire surface area of the cast iron grill gate. After that, simply put it back on, bring it up to temperature, scrub it again to make sure that you get any debris that's on there off and you're done. I'm Joshua Clement with Lighty Contractors. That's how you can scrub a cast iron grill gate.
