"To shorten your menstrual period, first you have to ask yourself why you want to shorten your period. If it's because you feel you're having extended or heavy periods, then we should figure out why you're having these heavy or prolonged or heavy menstrual periods to begin with. To be certain of the source of the abnormality. If it's simply because you just want to shorten your period, it's effecting your social activities. Then, that can be achieved as well. The most common way to achieve that is using birth control containing hormones. Again, the most common is a birth control pill. There are pills designed nowadays to decrease the length of your period from seven days to approximately three or four days. In addition, there are other options such as intrauterine devices that contain hormones that can shorten your periods. More specifically they actually lighten your periods. The final effect in most patients is that they tend to decrease the amount of time, or the length of time that a woman experiences a period. But, in the end, first ask yourself why you want to shorten it and if it's because you feel there is something not quite normal. Then the best, and the first thing to do, would be to contact a physician, preferably a gynecologist, to try to help figure out what the source of that abnormality is."
