Shelves offer valuable storage for small homes and apartments as well as a place to display favourite photos and mementos. Choose from a wide range of shelving ideas to suit a room's specific needs. Some shelves offer little support and serve a decidedly decorative purpose. Others feature sturdy materials that will bear more weight. Whether elegant, funky or purely functional, shelves play a vital role in every household.

Decorative

Showcase special photos and mementos in stylish display cases made from repurposed wine crates lined with decorative wrapping paper. Locate a wine crate without dividers for this project. Make a template of the crate sides and back with craft paper to use as a pattern for the liner. To ensure complete coverage, add an inch in length to each of the three sides and an additional inch in width to cover any gaps along the back surface. Affix the wrapping paper to the inside of the wine crate with spray adhesive. To provide extra support on drywall surfaces, use anchors and screws. Attach saw tooth picture hangers to the back of the crates, and hang them on the wall.

Floating

Floating shelves offer clean lines when displaying lightweight photos and decorative items. This type of shelf has no visible means of support and appears to float on the wall. The means for attaching a floating shelf to the wall is a wooden cleat system hidden by the shelf, which eliminates the need for cumbersome brackets. Floating shelves save space and allow multiple shelves to be stacked one above the other. Construct floating shelves by cutting the door in half lengthwise with a table or circular saw. Use the lag bolts to affix the cleat to the wall. Slip the hollow shelf over the cleat, and secure it with carpenter's glue and brads. Save time by purchasing inexpensive ready-made floating shelves from home improvement centres or discount retailers.

Whimsical

A quirky shelf make from books makes an eclectic design statement in a library, media room or child's bedroom. Select a large book for the shelf, and place it on metal brackets of a corresponding size. Consider using wood brackets painted to resemble book jackets for a cohesive look. Place the bookshelf on the brackets, and secure to the brackets with small screws or glue for stability.

Built-in

Construct shelves in an existing niche, or convert a small closet into a vertical storage area with built-ins. Built-in shelves provide maximum support for household items from books to kitchen pantry items. Simple construction involves custom-size shelves supported with wooden cleats running along the sides and the back of the recessed space. The cleats anchor into wall studs with screws to provide added strength.
