Leftover marble tiles from a flooring, countertop or backsplash project are building blocks for a variety of craft projects. Whether the tiles are 4 inches square, 1 foot square or larger, you can use them to decorate plastic, concrete or wooden objects, or allow them to serve as a blank slate for your own custom decorations.
Break marble tiles into small pieces, and incorporate them in your mosaic crafts. To break the tiles, wrap them in a towel, and strike them with a hammer. Don't hit the tiles too hard or you'll end up with dust. Glue the small marble bits onto a concrete birdbath, a wooden table top or a plastic planter with waterproof construction adhesive or thinset. Leave up to 1/4 inch between each piece so you can grout your mosaic design. Use exterior grout if you plan to leave the mosaic outside.
Cover the back of 4-inch-square marble tiles with felt to make coasters. Small swatches of colourful felt are available in most craft stores. Cut the fabric to size, and glue it to the tile with spray adhesive or viscous craft glue. Customise the marble tile coasters with glass paint, paint pens or rubber stamps to enhance the design.
Decorate marble tiles with glass paint, flat-backed cabochons, flat-backed rhinestones and stained glass mosaic tiles to create art for your garden. Arrange the decorative tiles along your flower garden border, or glue them to a concrete garden wall. Clear, waterproof construction adhesive works to attach the embellishments to the marble tiles and to attach the tiles to a concrete or wooden wall.
Make a small, occasional patio table from a marble tile and four decorative table legs. Look for metal table legs at home improvement stores, or have treated wood strips cut to size to make your own legs. Attach the legs to the underside of the marble tile with construction adhesive. Customise the marble tile with glass paint to coordinate it with your outdoor decor.
Make decorative signs for inside or outside your home with marble tiles. Paint letters or numbers onto 4-inch-square marble tiles, and glue them onto a painted or stained block of treated wood to create a distinctive outdoor sign for your home. Write inspirational messages on larger marble tiles, and hang them as wall art inside your home. Templates, stencils, glass paint and flat-backed stones are appropriate for decorating the tiles.
