Determine just how much backyard privacy you want when selecting ideas for your landscaping. Landscaping designs can build total seclusion or create private areas. Look at what you are providing privacy from. Outsiders casually taking a shortcut through your backyard and constantly noisy neighbours, among other factors, are definitely invaders of your personal space. Design your personal level of privacy in your backyard using both natural and man-made solutions.

Privacy Walls and Fences

A solid wall or fence, either wood or brick, will provide a high level of backyard privacy. A solid fence will prevent others in the neighbourhood, or those simply passing through, from easily entering or looking into your backyard. Fences are a good idea to provide privacy for small children to play in the backyard. One advantage that fences offer is that they require little, if any, maintenance. Other fences, such as picket fences, provide a level of privacy along with style. When choosing a particular type of fence, examine the style of your home as well as the overall architectural style of your neighbourhood.

Bushes and Shrubs

A line of bushes or shrubs provides a barrier between your backyard and the adjacent yards. Depending on how high you allow these natural barriers to grow, they also provide a degree of privacy. Colourful shrubs can add character to your property. Factor in the amount of time that you have to devote to the upkeep of bushes and shrubs, and, if necessary, choose those that require low maintenance. Some species of honeysuckle, for example, require less maintenance.

One strategically-placed tree or a line of trees provides backyard privacy. Trees also serve the dual purpose of also providing shade during hot days. You can install a hammock between trees and enjoy privacy, shade and relaxation.

Water Fountains

If landscaping that helps give you privacy from invading neighbourhood noises is your aim, water fountains and water falls are good options. Sitting next to flowing water can have soothing effects, especially if a fountain is placed within a backyard garden. The sound of the water provides an escape and distraction from the outside sounds from neighbouring yards and passing vehicles.

Trellis Screens

A trellis screen can provide privacy to a section of your backyard or patio. Behind it you can assemble your own private getaway with a table and chairs to relax and read, eat or talk, or place whatever lawn furniture you choose. Trellis screens are available in different colours. An advantage of these screens is that they are often lightweight and movable, giving you the option to easily move them around to various parts of the yard to choose different areas for privacy. You can change areas, depending on the sun's position in the sky during different times of day or depending on whether you want to be closer to the house or further away.
